Welcome to Artists for Literacy

We're celebrating 11 years of advocacy and art!

We began back in 2000 with the songs inspired by literature project, and now it's time to extend our reach and impact. Songs, movies, dance, theater - all literature-inspired art can promote the power of reading and transform lives.

As artists dedicated to promoting reading for all ages, we're mobilizing again to launch new initiatives that raise awareness of and money for literacy projects all across the country.  These programs build bridges between low-level readers and books, so that a 15 year-old or a fifty year-old can go to sleep at night dreaming like Walter Mitty, and see some new possibility in their lives.

The Literature Remix Project is on the horizon.

It will be based on the pilot program we did at the San Francisco School of the Arts.

  • Students and emerging artists enter contests for songs, music videos and short films inspired by books.
  • Peer to peer and celebrity judging; winning songs get matched with lesson plans to help teach the books
  • Online galleries where songs and videos are shared amongst parents, teachers and kids  (think: trailers for books)

We're plugging literature into 21st century technology, art and culture. Stay tuned...
